Certain fatalities in confinement have been publicly known, for instance a middle-aged healthcare leader who perished in prison after a third of a year in detention.

An inmate incarcerated with the individual testified that he was brought to the courtyard by correctional officers just prior to his death, visibly injured and unclothed from the lower body. His corpse has not been returned to Gaza.

Further inmates who perished in Israeli custody are unidentified. The prison service and defense forces gave analysts with the number of casualties in confinement, and minimal additional information including the facility where they lost their lives, but excluding the inmates’ personal details.

Documentation Problems

For 21 instances, mostly detainees from Gaza, researchers were not able to match the few details given by government bodies to a fatality recorded by advocacy bodies, by means of statements from former inmates or accounts in the news outlets.

The inmates’ next of kin might not have learned about their relatives’ casualties also, as Israel has made it difficult to locate Palestinians it is holding.
